1A - Baird

Welcome to the Class Page of 1A (Baird)

Staff in 1A - Baird

Welcome to Year 1 !

We are Baird class, named after the famous Scottish inventor John Logie Baird.

He is famous for inventing one of the first working televisions, so we call ourselves...

the TV Stars!  smiley

To this page we will be adding all the cool and exciting things that we've been learning, and also putting some information that helps the grown-ups too!

Term 1 - A Day In The Life

We will be exploring all the different jobs that people do. We will be looking at the things people do around our school, in our local area and in other countries! To help your child, please talk to them about the things that you do at home and at work.

Keep checking back for photos of our activities!

Term 2 - Let's Celebrate!

This is one of our favourite topics as we get to enjoy a huge variety of celebrations! We always start our topic with a class party, and we build upon this knowledge by exploring what happens in other celebrations; including Diwali, Chinese New Year, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Sunday, weddings, Christenings and of course, Christmas!

Term 3 - The Magic Toymaker

This will undoubtably be one of the children's favourite topics as we get to play with a lot of toys!

As part of our topic, the children will be finding out what toys were like in the past, so be prepared to be sent into the loft to find them! We will be exploring what materials toys are made from and how different toys move.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this topic, will be our visit to The Bear Factory to make our own bears! Or maybe it will be our Teddy Bear's picnic?!

Term 4 - Time Travellers!

This term we will be jumping in our time machines and travelling to different moments in history! We will begin by exploring our own history, looking at our family trees and how we change as we grow older. Then we shall be whisked off to explore The Great Fire of London, the land of the dinosaurs and the Egyptians! Are you brave enough to join us?

Term 5 - Flowers and Insects

This is one of my favourite topics as it's a sign that Spring is finally here! This term we will be exploring our local environment and discovering all the plants and insects we have living there. We will go on minibeast hunts to find lots of insects and we will be finding out which of our creepy crawlies, are actually insects! We are hoping that the bee keepers are able to visit us again, as their workshops are amazing! They bring a small observation hive into the classroom so the children get to see real honey bees close up. Truly fascinating!

Term 6 - Hooray... Let's Go On Holiday!

I can't believe it's term 6 already! We've learnt so much this year, but we've got another term packed full of fun learning!

This term we are learning about different types of holidays, why people go on them and what we need to organise and prepare before we go. It's the perfect topic to get us excited for a well-earned Summer break! It would be amazing if you could discuss with your child any holidays/days out that they have been on and if you could find some photos that the children can share with each other, that would be perfect!

We have two school trips this term... (1) Leeds Castle is part of History Week and is on the 1st of July, and (2) Botany Bay on the 8th of July.

Please remember that we have the Phonics Check during the week beginning the 13th of June, so please make sure your child is in school every day.

Where learning, laughter, challenge and community responsibility are encouraged and celebrated!
